Since opening two years ago, Dover Street Market New York has become a mecca for those discerning shoppers looking for something beyond the average retail exchange. The location (a seven-story Beaux-Arts building on a decidedly un-trendy block of Midtown East) and the design (arty installations, from Wonderland-whimsical to starkly minimal, that are completely reimagined seasonally) are enough to make DSMNY an outlier in the world of luxury retailers. But it’s the diverse edit that has earned DSMNY its dedicated following. The mix of streetwear, avant-garde, up-and-comers, and fashion mainstays—Prada hangs beside cult skate-wear brand Supreme, Nike next to Belgian designer Stephan Schneider—is a recipe for dynamic shopping.
Dover Street Market’s founder, Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo, has consistently championed the unexpected and unconventional at Dover Street Market (whose first London store opened in 2004, followed by a second in Tokyo's Ginza district in 2006 and New York in 2013). As DSMNY’s general manager James Gilchrist explains, “For Rei Kawakubo, it is very important that each DSM is unique to its location. Like the London and Ginza stores, we have the freedom to make our own buy. So even if a brand is carried at all DSM’s, the selection at each is different.”
To mark the store’s two year anniversary, DSMNY has upped the ante with a collection of limited-edition pieces that will be exclusive to the New York boutique. Launching today, just in time for holiday gifting, the collection epitomizes the store’s singular style. Herewith, eight pieces on our wish list.
