Fashion News: June 2018’s Shopping, Style, and Retail Report
A short list of what’s new and notable in global women’s and men’s style this month.
Just in time for Father’s Day, this June is all about shopping. From product debuts (like Missoni’s cookbook and Foundrae’s fine jewelry for men) to store expansions (including Saks Fifth Avenue NYC’s massive new beauty floor and Isaia’s new boutique at Rome's famous Spanish Steps) and collaborations (see: Pierre Hardy and Lemlem, and Sant Ambroeus and Frescobol Carioca), the first full month of summer has plenty in-store. Read on for all June’s fashion updates.
Beyond vibrant knitwear, the Missonis have been known to lead a colorful life. Their dinner parties every fashion week, for example, are some of the fashion crowd’s most coveted invites. Now, the family offers a taste of their vibrant lifestyle by sharing (for the first time) their guarded recipes with the world in The Missoni Family Cookbook—alongside four generations worth of photos, illustrations, and memories. “At home,” says Francesco Maccapani Missoni (the son of Missoni’s creative director, Angela Missoni), “we only use strictly seasonal, fresh, and locally available ingredients, and we grow most of the herbs and vegetables in our garden.” And from their garden, they cook using recipes for spring vegetable stew with artichokes, peas, fava beans, and romaine (Vignarola), veal meatballs with balsamic vinegar and cherry tomatoes (Polpettine con Aceto Balsamico e Pomodorini), and more—all within the 240-page cookbook divided by season. Available now; $50.
Saks has a vision for the future of beauty—and it looks something like a sun-drenched floor with restored historic windows overlooking Fifth Avenue, filled with over 120 of the industry’s most innovative beauty and wellness brands. Located within the brand’s Fifth Avenue flagship, the new beauty hub is 32,000 square feet and 40% larger than its former location on the ground floor. It also offers special experiences including, but certainly not limited to, bespoke eyebrow threading and lash tinting by Blink Brow Bar London; hand-tied floral arrangements by EB florals; non-invasive facial treatments by the store’s exclusive FaceGym; a slimming massage by Martine de Richeville, CoolSculpting by Skinney MedSpa, and meditation manicures by Sundays. 611 Fifth Ave., Level 2.
Its third store in Italy, Napoli-based menswear label Isaia has opened a Roman boutique at the base of the Spanish Steps. The space—designed by Ferrari Architetti, and filled by Alberta Saladino and Bay of Naples—is divided into five areas including sportswear, tailored clothing, a made-to-measure room, a tailor shop, and “Vesuvio” VIP room. As with the brand’s other locations, the new boutique includes a pool table and red lacquered piano. Via Bocca di Leone 68.
After designing a signet ring for her husband, the co-founder of fine jewelry label Foundrae, Murat, decided to expand into men’s jewelry. The masculine collection introduces new modern heirlooms—like gold and brass keys, pen knives, cigar bands, chains, and signet rings—but maintains the brand’s core symbols of protection, strength, and dream. The pieces are available in-store at Foundrae’s flagship, as well as Maxfield’s, Mad Lords and Browns London.
Pierre Hardy and Lemlem (model and activist Liya Kebede’s ten-year-old brand) have teamed to create a limited edition accessory collection. The capsule includes Pierre Hardy’s signature sandals and sneakers updated in Lemlem’s artisanal fabrics, as well as a newly-designed bag and pouch available in the same striped woven fabric. The materials are all locally hand-crafted from Ethiopia, Kebede’s native. Bonus: part of the profits from the capsule support Kebede’s foundation. Available now in-store and online.
From Superga to Colette, Sant Ambroeus has released a number of limited edition collaborations. For this summer, the Italian restaurant has teamed with Brazilian swimwear label Frescobol Carioca to create men's swim trunks in its signature sorbet color. Alongside coffee and croissants, the limited edition trunks are available for $220 at Sant Ambroeus in Soho, Southampton, and Palm Beach.
Inspired by their passion for art and ballet, co-founders Danilo Giordano and Stephanie Roy-Heckl have created an all-new women’s shoe line. With meticulous attention to detail, the shoes feature elements such as heels curved to mimic a swan’s neck as an homage to Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. The ultra-feminine silhouettes are crafted in layers of Italian leather and velvet, Spanish lace, studs, and other adornments. Starting at $695, the debut collection is available at Nordstrom.com, DahliaSelva.com, Hu’s Shoes in Washington, DC and at Saks Fifth Avenue in Mexico.
Eugenia Kim pioneered monogram sunhats. Now, the brand is giving shoppers the ability to make their own statement with an online personalization program. Orders include options such as hat style, trim, text material, colors, and words and take about two weeks to produce. Starting at $575.
