Finding the perfect fall jacket is one of the best shopping errands of the year. Autumnal coats really are the cream of the accessories crop, and sifting through suede jackets and army-colored trenches in all their leather-trimmed glory is a treat. For early fall, it’s all about breathable material and warm hues to go with the leaves’ changing colors. As the sky gets grayer, you need down jackets that have room for layers, and hooded-rain coats to protect you from unpredictable, almost-winter weather. The key takeaway here is that one jacket might not be enough. That's why we've selected the 11 best coats for fall that are cozy-yet-stylish for men and women.

Burberry's Westminster Heritage Trench Coat

Few coats are as timeless and functional as a Burberry trench. This army green version is an oversized take on a signature style. When cinched at the waist, the shoulders become more prominent and the epaulets rise to reveal a hint of tartan lining. The relaxed fit, in exquisite tumbled tropical gabardine, strikes the right balance between elevated and easy. As temperatures drop, the roominess of this piece make layering more comfortable. The tartan-lined details that peak out in subtle places give the classic shape a special flair.

Gabriela Heart's Joaquin Double-breasted Pleated Cashmere Coat

A classic, well-tailored trench is reimagined in double-face camel cashmere in this fall coat by Gabriela Hearst. The double-breasted shawl collar offers a revealing neck that makes the warm piece feel more transitional. It can be worn with lighter pieces or layered atop a turtleneck and knits. The soft pleats down the back and adjustable waist belt offer a flattering shape that can be personalized to the wearer.

Sandro Short Leather Jacket

This slightly abbreviated jacket from Sandro falls just above the hips for a fit that is extremely flattering. Its classic moto style and rich black sheepskin composition pair well with high-waisted shapes and printed dresses. Sleek and versatile, a well-crafted leather jacket will enrich any fall wardrobe.

Ben Sherman Men's Harrington Jacket

The Ben Sherman Harrington jacket works for fall and spring, especially in the cream (or “putty”) color. The flap-and-button collar gives the jacket a polished look and matches the side pockets. It’s a zip-up, which makes it a little less formal than a peacoat or even a beige trench. With gingham lining on the interior, it’s definitely a preppy look—the ideal jacket for fall in the Hamptons.

Cos Short Wool Pea Coat

Cos offers a lighter alternative to the classic full-length peacoat with this shorter, boxier version. Ultra modern, this piece flairs subtly at the hem and tapers at the shoulder. When worn open over form-fitting shapes—a skinny jean, a bodysuit, a ribbed knit dress—it creates a stunning sculptural shape. Rendered in a smoothly brushed wool blend, this double-breasted peacoat is sure to elevate any ensemble this season.

Loro Piana Traveller Windmate Storm System Shell Field Jacket

Exceptional fabrics are at the forefront of all Loro Piana pieces, and the Traveller Windmate Story System Shell Field Jacket is no exception. The iconic overcoat is rendered in a brand-exclusive combination of microfibre and cashmere, and treated with “Storm System”—a thin micro-molecular membrane that is applied to the fabric to ensure impermeability and breathability. It is as sleek as it is functional: waterproof and wind-resistance meet elegant tailoring.

Paul Stuart Merino Wool Sweater Jacket

This sweater jacket from Paul Stuart gets its texture from super geelong Australian yarn. It features a felted front panel and contrast ribbed sleeves. Versatile and inimitably soft, this piece is the perfect for weekend travel—accommodating cooler temperatures and conservative space in a carry-on.

Shop: $725

Gucci Men's Leather Bomber Jacket

Bomber jacket meets equestrian vibes in this classic-with-a-twist Gucci leather jacket. The cuffs and collar feature knit greens and reds, which add an autumnal element to an otherwise minimalist black leather jacket. A relatively short jacket, it hits at the waist and has knit trim along the bottom, which gives it a slimming effect. The leather, made in Italy, is sturdy enough to keep you warm in the fall, and it retains its shape with a simple stripe along the back and arms of the jacket.

Shop: $3,980

Courtesy Vince

Vince Women's Black Cherry Modern Coat

A mod take on the long peacoat, this black cherry coat is what fall aesthetic dreams are made of. The burgundy radiates Pinot Noir and pumpkin spice vibes. The oversized cut allows for layering with a chunky scarf, but it also fits nicely over slim-cut sweaters and skinny jeans. In true pea coat form, Vince’s modern coat has “classic elements like notched lapels and welt pockets.”
