Name to Know: I Pezzi Dipinti

Annelise Howard Phillips

The exclusive SoHo designer Cathryn Collins specializes in items that will get you through the winter in style.

In a city where a trend is born every two minutes—and dies just as quickly—Cathryn Collins’s by-appointment-only New York atelier, I Pezzi Dipinti, is a safe haven. The SoHo-based designer concentrates on only three things: richly dyed textiles, scarves, and wraps; elegantly tailored cashmere sweaters; and rugged, undone furs. “What I came to understand is that I want the pieces that I make to be things that last forever,” the 56-year-old Collins says. To that end her design studio is more like a club and her customers the members. Collins caters to that loyal and global clientele herself, both in the atelier and via trunk shows in cities from San Francisco to London, where hit items, such as this season’s rabbit gilet, priced from $1,390, have sold out in less than five minutes. I Pezzi Dipinti hand-spun, -loomed, and -dyed cashmere shawl, $1,995; and kalgan-lamb’s-wool and satin jacket, $3,000; 212-941-9966,
