The Sweet Escape

On the enduring allure of the tiki bar.

Highly subjective takes on life's most interesting experiences.

What’s the best swimming spot you’ve ever been to?

The best swim of my life was in Brännö, Sweden. Brännö, a tiny island, is part of Gothenburg’s southern archipelago. The small homes in the 800-person community are mostly owned by city dwellers — it’s a tram and 30-minute ferry ride away from central Gothenburg and cars are banned on the island. I visited a friend at her summer cabin there and we bicycled with her friends to their favorite secluded swimming spot and skinny-dipped under cloudless Swedish blue skies. Heaven!

What’s the best-tasting food you’ve ever eaten?

The best food I’ve ever eaten was in Tbilisi, Georgia. I was there on a work trip and was stunned to discover that even in my mediocre hotel the food was some of the best I’d ever had in my life. I sampled the city’s restaurants enthusiastically. I especially loved badrijani nigvzit, fried eggplant rolls stuffed with a walnut and garlic paste and topped with fresh pomegranate seeds. And I couldn’t get enough khachapuri, Georgian cheese bread, which I argue (controversially, I know) is better than pizza.
