Bairro Alto
Wine Bar

The flagship bar of one of Portugal’s oldest producers, José Maria da Fonseca, By the Wine is nearly entirely dedicated to the brand’s impressive and historic inventory, all available by the glass. The space is quirkily decorated with various wine paraphernalia, including a curved ceiling covered in over 3,600 wine bottles. JMF’s Periquita, which many credit with debuting the Castelão grape, a varietal indigenous to the Tejo region of Portugal, is a signature production that must be tried here. But the bar also carries rare, limited-production labels such as those made in collaboration with Van Zellers & Co. Plus, By the Wine often hosts public launches for new JMF vintages.
