Napoleon drank Vin de Constance on the island of St Helena to comfort himself in exile and the British Prime Minister, who’d previewed it at Downing Street, ensured regular deliveries went to Buckingham Palace for the King. Although production of this famous, sweet desert wine all but ceased in the late 19th century when the disease of Phylloxera destroyed the Cape vineyards, it was successfully reintroduced at Klein Constantia in 1986 using the same vineyards which once produced the fabled vintage. Bring home a 1.5 liter magnum bottle of Vin de Constance, which regularly appears on lists of the world’s top wines.
