Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel
Originally constructed to cater to First Class cruise passengers on the Union-Castle Shipping Line, The Mount Nelson (“the Nellie” as locals call it) is the Grand Dame hotel of Cape Town. Opened in 1899, the Nellie was the first in South Africa to offer hot and cold running water; the pink stucco edifice served as the base for the British Army during the Second Boer War. Today, high tea in the English colonial lounge – which spills out onto the verandah and gardens - is a popular pastime amongst visitors and locals alike and the perfect event for people watching. The Nellie’s central location is convenient for those interested in exploring Cape Town’s many museums.
