The Young Pope on HBO
Jude Law stars as Pope Piux XIII, the first American pope and a youthful megalomaniac whose rise to the papacy augurs an ultra-conservative turn in the Catholic Church, in this playfully sinister series from Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. Known for stylish and sly films like Il Divo and The Great Beauty, Sorrentino has earned a reputation as the modern heir to Fellini and early raves from across the Atlantic indicate he takes full advantage of Law’s unique gifts. His Pius XII, aka Lenny Belardo, cuts a mercurial and unsettling figure as a political naïf who masters the notoriously fiendish politics of the Curia—a role that should take on plenty of fascinating new undertones given the western world’s new political order. Premieres January 15; hbo.com.
