What to do, see, and experience this month around the world.
The Elbphilharmonie Opens in Hamburg
January 11 and 12
Boats sailing down the Elbe this month will see what looks like a giant, jagged crystal rising out of the Hamburg waterfront, but in fact, it’s a stunning new concert hall (actually, three). Home to a new orchestra, the NDR Elbphilahrmonie, the Herzog & de Meuron–designed Elbphilharmonie nods to Hamburg’s past while offering a new cultural hub for the city’s future: Set atop a historic warehouse used in the 1960s for tea, cocoa, and tobacco storage, a shimmering glass addition sweeps into peaks atop the older structure, seeming to reflect the waves of the adjacent Elbe. Within the new building, there are halls for the philharmonic and for chamber music; a public plaza with a 360-degree viewing platform from which to take in the city from above; a five-star hotel; luxury residences; and other features. The opening celebration will feature two concerts by the resident orchestra, followed by a three-week festival starring major international ensembles like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and more.
