Neoclassical Landmark: Pinacoteca do Estado

Housed inside a gorgeous Neoclassical building inaugurated in 1905, the city’s oldest art museum remains one of its best. The permanent collection leans heavily on Brazilian art—especially that of São Paulo (Paulista art)—with notable works from a number of iconic modernists like Portinari and Di Cavalcanti. The museum also hosts one of the largest assemblages of 19th-century paintings and sculptures in Brazil. The café, which hugs leafy Parque da Luz, is immensely pleasant.
