Delhi: In Stitches

James T. Murray

Delhi society mavens rely on Nita Nakra for all their custom embroidery, beading, and sequin work. Clients bring plain fabrics to have embellished, design their own clothes for her to produce, clip photos of pieces they want copied, or simply present ideas for outfits they’d like her to create. Nakra works by commission only and oversees the skilled craftsmen who handstitch her pieces. There’s often a waiting list, and depending on what’s involved, Nakra needs one to three weeks to finish an item. (She ships finished products worldwide.) We especially love her design for a modern-style sari, almost a long skirt, really. The bejeweled ivory-chiffon version, which sells for about $1,200, is perfect for a black-tie soirée on any continent. At E114, Greater Kailash Part-II; 91-98/1840-3312.
