Queen Mary

Long a cult figure in the New York art world, Mary Heilmann, 68, makes paintings that are punchy, even goofy, takes on abstraction. It’s a style that has influenced a lot of younger artists, so it’s no surprise that her work turned up in the pulse-taking Whitney Biennial (on through June 1). A full retrospective of Heilmann’s work—her first—is traveling around the United States. It stops at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, this summer before landing at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York in the fall.
