These 10 alfresco artworks have either just been installed or are on their way out. Here’s what to marvel at before they’re gone.
“Heidelberg Project” by Tyree Guyton
Since the 1980s, artist Tyree Guyton has been turning a section of Detroit’s Heidelberg Street into an art park known as the “Heidelberg Project.” In the last year suspicious fires have destroyed six of the houses that Guyton had transformed into colorful works of art, using discarded quotidian objects (children’s toys, records, clocks, shoes)—optimistic beacons amid the city’s decay. But fans of the project aren’t giving up, and Guyton is improving security and raising money to rebuild. Among the attractions still standing is the Dotty Wotty house (pictured), but stay tuned for more projects as Heidelberg roars back to life. Heidelberg St.; 313-974-6894; heidelberg.org.
