Ed Zwick’s far-ranging intellect has offered up some of the most geopolitically minded mainstream dramas of recent years—say, The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise and Blood Diamond, featuring an Afrikaner-accented Leonardo DiCaprio. So it’s not surprising that the director would be drawn to the real-life story of Bobby Fischer’s 1972 chess match against the reigning world champion, Soviet Boris Spassky, in the match that has long been considered a symbolic victory in the Cold War. Tobey Maguire plays the troubled prodigy, whose psychological instability may well have been key to his stunning play in chess’s “Match of the Century.”
