In a first for the luxury cruise industry, Silversea’s Silver Spirit is undergoing an extraordinary lengthening project: at its Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo, Italy, this past weekend, the ship’s hull was cut in half and pulled apart to make space for the installment of a prebuilt 49-foot mid-section.
The undertaking will create significantly more space onboard for public areas, which will include two new restaurants, a larger sky deck at 50 feet, a brand-new Zagara Spa to replicate those found on the Silver Muse and Silver Cloud, a gym with an outdoor aerobics area, and an arts café that will host rotating exhibitions.
The lengthening will be followed by a refurbishment that will follow the design of company’s newest and most luxurious ship, Silver Muse. When the Silver launches on May 6, it will feature 34 additional suites with handmade Savoir mattresses, horsehair toppers, and updated in-room technology, while all other rooms will be expanded and re-done in the Muse’s muted color palette. Seven days from $5,600; silversea.com.
