Objets d’Art for an Elevated Table

A curated collection of five-star linens, glassware, and beautiful embellishments.

Overwater bungalows are some of the most sought-after accommodations across the globe. After all, what's more luxurious than privately lounging over the ocean? Well, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands managed to find something: overwater villas with disappearing walls.

The new 100-villa resort on the stunning beaches of the North Malé Atoll was designed by Kerry Hill Architects and is a modern marvel in the middle of the sea. The project's goal was to embrace the circle of island life and help guests connect to nature. To do that, the team maximized views to the horizon. That's why each features clean sweeping curves and panoramic sliding doors that disappear into the wall blurring the line between inside and out. The curved deck and private infinity-edge pool extend the connection into the ocean beyond.

"We wanted to rethink from first principles how to build appropriately in the Maldives today, with strong, contemporary architectural forms that amplify the profound connection between the guest and the encompassing natural spectacle," Kerry Hill Architects told Departures in a statement.

The openness of the villas and common resort space also allows for a natural breeze to blow through. This, again, is another way to amplify the connection to the outdoors even while laying in bed. It also is part of the mission to protect the natural environment and fragile reef ecosystem. The natural breeze is harnessed to cool the public spaces. At the same time, pre-fabricated design methods and materials ensured that no cutting was necessary on the island and generated zero waste or pollution.

Beyond the luxe design, the property features several amenities that are sure to make it one of the most impressive in the Maldives. Guests will have access to a picturesque Fari Marina--which will be home to boutiques and dining options--seven restaurants and bars, butler service, an overwater spa, indoor-outdoor Ritz Kids Club, and more. And all f this is located just a 45-minute journey by speedboat or a 10-minute seaplane flight from Malé International Airport.
