Picture the most scenic mental photograph you can when you think of Denmark and the town of Mariager is as close as you can get to it in real life.
But before we dive into the specifics of what makes Mariager so wonderful, here’s a fun fact: This region is not technically a fjord. In fact, any inlet from the ocean is called a fjord in the Danish language. Not only is this the perfect trivia knowledge, it’s also important to keep in mind when visiting. Don’t expect the dramatic cliffsides you’d see in Northern Norway, but a tranquil scene more befitting of a beach visit.
Located in northeastern Denmark, Mariager is one of the longest inlets in the country. The town is named for the fjord region it’s located on, which serves up all of the once-in-a-lifetime views you’d expect: rolling meadows that seem to go on for ages, lush forested areas, and slow rising slopes. There is a bit of lift from one end of the city to the other, meaning you can climb to the top of the town and you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views.
One of the best parts about Mariager is its proximity to historic sites around the fjord. The region is cloaked in history, being home to one of the oldest Viking settlements, Hobro. It’s also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts; hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and biking are all encouraged here.
You may know Mariager by another name: The City of Roses. Pay a visit during the spring and you’ll find out why: rose bushes will be in full bloom along Mariager’s streets. The cobblestone streets in Mariager wind through streets lined with Danish timber-framed homes, a design recognized around the world.
In terms of what to do, there are ton of specialty museums. There’s the Sødisbakkes Museum, which walks visitors through everyday life for the residents of the Sødisbakkes (an institute for people with mental and physical disabilities) years ago. Today, it’s dedicated to showcasing the artwork from residents past. You can also visit the Mariager Saltcenter, where you’ll learn all about the region’s salt production and also have the opportunity to take a dip in their salt-laden bath.
