Equinox may have started as a chain of high-end gyms, but they are quickly taking over the hospitality world. The brand recently opened its first hotel in New York City’s newest neighborhood Hudson Yards, and now they’re launching bespoke luxury travel programs.
Called Explore, the experiences will consist of domestic and international multi-day journeys. While the news of the new programming was announced earlier this year, the company just opened up booking and revealed several upcoming trips. The curated itineraries are meant to be holistic and achievement-based, where members perform intense physical activity and learn a new skill.
“We are seeing that people are placing a real focus on unique experiences. It used to be that it was enough to have seen the major sites and eaten in the world's best restaurants. These days, people want to experience off the beaten path activities that are truly unique to the destination," said Leah Howe, Senior Director of Equinox Explore. "Active travel is the perfect medium for this!”
The Costa Rica: Surf + Yoga + Life experience, for example, is a six-day trip where you learn how to surf. Four semi-private lessons are included with the option to surf throughout the day. Paddling board through mangroves, personal training sessions, health coaching, daily meditation, and mobility workshops are also included to help you feel stronger and more rejuvenated than when you came.
You might wonder how this trip is different than any other surf retreat. Well, Equinox took its famous integrated movement nutrition and regeneration approach and applied it to the experience. Before you even leave, you’ll be given a surfing specific training package created by Tier X Coach Abe Maynard so you’ll be physically prepared before getting in the water. You’ll also fill out a pre-trip survey explaining your health goals, and a Tier X Coach will conduct individual one-on-one private sessions during the trip to help you accomplish those onsite and beyond.
Local culture is incorporated into the pillars of movement, nutrition, and regeneration, as well. A famed Costa Rican wilderness guide will lead a nature walk, and several other regional experts will explain local traditions when it comes to health and wellness.
It’s these types of details that are part of every trip, even if the activity is different. The Florence trip focuses on running, Morocco is all about reaching your peak performance, and Hudson Valley welcomes cycling lovers. Of course, true to the elevated persona of Equinox, overnight stays at stunning hotels are also included.
