This month, Bermuda plays host to the premiere sailing event of the season: the 2017 America’s Cup. So we enlisted an expert—Bermudian-born music producer and DJ Noise Cans—to share his must-visit spots with DEPARTURES readers.
“People always ask me how Bermuda has influenced my music, but growing up here has influenced my entire being,” says Noise Cans, whose sonic style blends Caribbean beats with modern electronic production. (His aesthetic also pays homage to Bermuda’s native Gombey, a folklife tradition involving masquerade and performance art that incorporates a blend of African, Caribbean, and British cultures.)
Read on for his chosen places to go for an authentic local experience, plus a specially curated playlist to listen to while spectating or exploring the island.
Eat: Art Mels
“To me, this is the best fish sandwich on the island. You have to get it on raisin bread with tartar sauce!” 9 St Monica's Rd., Hamilton; 441-295-3965.
Drink: Swizzle INN
“The Swizzle Inn is Bermuda's oldest—and certainly most well known—pub. Their signature drink, ‘The Swizzle,’ is considered the best [of its kind] on the island.” 3 Blue Hole Hill, Bailey’s Bay; 441-293-1854; swizzleinn.com.
Learn: National Museum of Bermuda
“If you’re looking to get a snapshot of the island’s history, this is the place to do it. It’s within the Commissioners House in Royal Naval dockyard and the neighboring Shipwreck Exhibit.” The Keep, Maritime Ln.; 441-234-1418; nmb.bm.
Celebrate: Harbor Nights
"Every Wednesday evening, Front Street, the main street in Hamilton, gets closed to all vehicles after sunset. There is huge mix of live entertainment, local Gombey troupes (which inspired the mask I wear), and various food and craft vendors. This is a great family event, and gives a wonderful insight into Bermudian culture.”
See: Crystal Caves
“Bermuda is full of natural attractions, from our beautiful beaches to these must-see underground caves.” 8 Crystal Caves Rd., Hamilton; 441-293-0640; caves.bm.
Swim: Tobacco Bay
“Tobacco Bay is a true Bermuda treasure. It is the perfect mix of food, music, an amazing beach, and snorkeling.” 9 Coot’s Pond Rd., St. George; 441-737-2355; tobaccobay.bm.
