Even when you’re in love, winter can be a tough season to get through. After the hectic holiday season is through, it can seem a long and dreary march until the excitement of spring begins to thaw. This year, resolve to shake things up by planning a romantic winter getaway.

For this batch of romantic wintery escapes, we’ve selected places that will appeal to a variety of couples. Urbanites can spring to life by exploring a new city together while those that prefer nature can get well off the beaten together. There are options close to home or halfway across the globe.

But no matter how disparate these destinations may seem, they all have one thing in common: they’re so romantic, you and your partner may forget than anybody else is even there.

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is known as a place of healing. In the winter, its famous rust-colored land dons a thin layer of white powder and becomes even more restorative. Romantic lodgings vary from secluded cabins hidden in a canyon to luxurious five-star resorts with spa. To experience the best views the area has to offer, book a sunrise hot air balloon ride that ends with a champagne breakfast.

Whistler, Canada

Whether or not you’re skiers, Whistler is a romantic winter wonderland for couples. It’s possible to go spend a day in the spa, partake in a snowmobile-fondue tour or just while away the hours at an alpine lodge. If you’ve got a roaring fire and a great view, you’re forgiven for spending an entire vacation holed up in a hotel room.

Stowe, Vermont

Covered bridges are romantic year-round. But when they’re covered in a fine layer of snow, they become something magical. In fact, all of Stowe becomes a dazzling romantic getaway in the winter months. Go snowshoeing in the woods or enjoy the area’s vineyards and breweries together. Side note: picking up a tub at the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory is a surprisingly romantic move.

Kauai, Hawaii

If you’re the type of couple that fares better in warmer weather, book a flight to Kauai. As one of Hawaii’s more laid-back islands, Kauai has a lot to offer for a romantic getaway. There are stunning, technicolor sunsets, secluded beaches, and awe-inspiring coastal rock formations. While there’s plenty to do on the island, you’re forgiven if you don’t move from your beach chair.

Lake George, New York

Scenic Lake George is a fantastic option for couples who like it best when they feel they’re alone in nature. Stay in a secluded B&B away from the world or nestle by a stone fireplace in an old-school lodge. When you want to head back into civilization, there are a bevy of upscale dining options and even a few local craft breweries.

Patagonia, Chile

Go on a far-flung adventure together at (practically) the tip of the world. Patagonia is beloved for its untouched nature. Couples can explore glaciers, forests, and mountaintops together. Watch the Magellanic penguins congregate and then retreat back to an isolated hotel, preferably with sweeping views outside your window.

Marrakech, Morocco

Morocco’s red city is enchanting year-round. But there’s something even more delectable about Marrakech when you know that everyone back home is freezing in the winter cold. Book a romantic stay in one of the city’s glamorous riads and then get lost in the winding medina together. Tour one of the ancient palaces and listen to the tales of “1,001 Arabian Nights” for romantic inspiration from ancient lovers.

Hokkaido, Japan

Active couples can escape to Hokkaido, known for having some of the best powder in the word for skiers. After the slopes, take things slow in an onsen (Japanese hot spring) together. The area is also known for its whiskey distilleries, making it a perfect destination for couples who like to indulge together.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

The vistas of St. Moritz are unbelievably picturesque. The town looks more like a movie set than an actual place. It’s a fairytale backdrop to a wintry romance. Spend the day skiing downhill, exploring town or trekking through the cross-country trails. A day of exercise gives you the perfect excuse to stay in at night and curl up by the fire apres-ski.

Lapland, Finland

Get off the beaten track together. A trip to Finnish Lapland in Winter is full of romantic possibility. Share a reindeer ride, spend time in a sauna and enjoy each other’s company without the distractions of civilization. Book a stay in one of the glass igloos at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort to spend a romantic night sharing a view of the northern lights from your bed.

Quebec City, Quebec

If the setting to your fairytale romance involves a castle on a hill, Quebec will exceed your expectations. The Canadian city has the feel of a historic European city—but you don’t have to leave the continent. Book a room at the historic Chateau Frontenac for a glamorous, luxurious getaway that is celebrating its 125th birthday this year.
