As new technologies allow air travel to be more impressive than ever before, airlines are battling it out to offer the most impressive experiences to travelers. And the world is taking note.

AirlineRatings.com declared Singapore Airlines the best airline in the world for a host of improvements and new offerings, including the introduction of a staggering 19-hour non-stop trek from New York City (Newark International Airport) to Singapore (Changi Airport).

"Singapore was honored for the first time for its market leadership in in-flight service, new aircraft types such as the A350 and 787-10, revamped interiors and the launch of the non-stop Singapore to New York service as well as operational safety," according to AirlineRatings.com.

Known for their impeccable service, polished fleet, and impressive routes, Singapore Airlines jumped two spots this year from number three, taking over the title from five-time consecutive winner Air New Zealand.

A number of factors were considered in the decision, including a consistent level of service, innovation, staff engagement, as well as fleet age, passenger reviews, profitability, and investment rating.

A handful of carriers that had made the list in years past didn't make the cut this year, including Korean Air, Etihad Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.
