The time for admiring the magnificent changing colors of leaves is just around the corner, and for those looking for a relaxing way to observe fall foliage in all its glory, Amtrak is bringing back its historic Great Dome Car for the season.
The upper level of the glass-roofed dome car, currently the only one of its kind that still remains in service, has windows on every side, including the ceiling, so you’re guaranteed mesmerizing views no matter where you look.
Running from Sept. 27 through Nov. 2, the vintage train whisks travelers on a scenic ride from Albany, New York to Montreal, Canada, cutting through the Adirondack Mountains, where spectacular foliage is known to be on display each year.
In addition to the forest and mountain views, travelers will be treated to views of Lake Champlain before arriving in Montreal.
Originally built in 1955, the dome car is only in service for a limited time, with one-way tickets from Albany to Montreal starting at $53.
You can also book tickets from Albany to Port Henry for $32, from Albany to Saratoga Springs for $19, from Saratoga Springs to Montreal for $46, from Port Henry to Montreal for $27, and from Westport to Montreal for $26.
The Great Dome Car operates north on Adirondack train 69 from Albany on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays, and south on Adirondack train 68 from Montreal on Fridays, Sundays, and Tuesdays.
Seats on the dome car are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we recommend arriving early to guarantee yourself a seat filled with dreamy views.
