Select Centurion Lounges—the exclusive airport lounges open only to American Express Platinum and Delta Skymiles Reserve Card Members—will reopen as of early October. With the reopenings come two crucial developments: a brand-new Centurion Lounge Commitment to health and safety, and the expansion of the lounges at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport.

Both expansions will be completed by 2021—The Centurion Lounge at LGA will feature more workspaces, private phone rooms, and coveted NYC skyline views. The lounge is relocating within Terminal B to a space twice the size of the original LaGuardia lounge. The Las Vegas lounge—the first Centurion Lounge to open in 2013—will expand from about 9,000 square feet to more than 13,400 square feet and feature enhancements like new workspaces, a reception redesign, and additional common areas.

As for the Centurion Lounge Commitment, as members resume traveling and lounges move to reopen, health and safety amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is top of mind. Lounges will reopen with socially distanced seating, reduced capacity, increased cleaning frequency, and mask requirements. In lieu of a buffet, food will now be served to Centurion Card Members and contactless check-in is available through the American Express App. These protocols are just the beginning—as part of the Centurion Lounge Commitment, the new practices will be continuously evaluated based on Card Members’ needs and feedback, and of course, the expertise of health authorities and state and local government regulations.

Among other factors, American Express based these expansion plans and comprehensive safety measures off the needs of their Card Members. Amex Trendex, a monthly report from American Express, found that over half (56%) of consumers who typically travel domestically anticipate feeling comfortable traveling to a domestic destination within six months.

American Express plans to reopen the Centurion Lounges at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport on October 5, 2020, with more to follow. In addition to expanding the LGA and LAS Centurion Lounges, they are working to open new Centurion Lounges at London’s Heathrow Airport, Denver International Airport, and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
