Sure, there are the more obvious items such as long pants to protect your feet from bug bites, a sturdy pair of boots, and a waterproof jacket. And if your camp has a swimming pool, a bathing suit goes without saying.

If you're doing your safari trek in between your stays at a more luxe hotel, like the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari for instance, Instead of bringing your regular carry-on, pack everything in a sturdy duffle bag––they weigh way less than your average hard shell suitcase and are easier to carry around in this situation. But if you are going to be spending several days in a camp in the middle of a national park in Africa, you should also pack a few not so obvious items such as a small flashlight, extra batteries for your camera, a power strip, a pair of really good binoculars (pack a pair for each member of your family if you don’t want to miss on any of the action), and a DEET-based bug spray. Make sure your camera is water- and sand-proof and practice taking photos of fast-moving objects before you head out to the actual safari.

Check out our list of safari essentials to bring with you on your next African adventure.
