Fact—accessories make any outfit better. And that is true for both men and women’s fashion. They can turn even the most simple of dresses into a show-stopping piece if you style it with the right jewelry, purse, and shoes. And since fall is just around the corner, now is the right time to update your closet with next season’s must-have accessories.

And when it comes to trends there’s no one better than Saks Fifth Avenue’s jet-setting buyers and personal shoppers to fill us in on the hottest new accessories. We reached out to the company’s fashion director, Roopal Patel, to tell us what we should add to our must-buy list.

“If we are excited and emotional about a great accessory in the [designer’s] showroom, we know our customers will be too,” she says. Every season Patel, who oversees men’s and womenswear as well as accessories in the company, scouts the market for the latest It bag, statement jewelry, or must-have pair of boots.

We asked her if she and her team shop with trends in mind or would rather opt for more functional and timeless pieces that can be styled in a lot of ways.

“It’s a balancing act! We are constantly on the lookout for new and exciting trends for our customers, but always consider versatility and how fashion and accessories will translate into everyday life,” she said.

So how do you make it all work? Tony Ferreira, a personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue Beverly Hills explains that it’s important to mix things up when you are planning your seasonal wardrobe.

“Typically, for a private shopping session for accessories, I assess my client's individual style and pull handbags, jewelry, shoes that fit the season. I mix in must-haves with classic silhouettes, or tailor the pieces to work with a certain outfit they have in mind,” he says.

And while he says that apparel appointments usually take longer since his clients need to try on all the pieces, he admits that he has had accessory appointments “run for hours or days.”

“Once my client arrives, depending on their needs, it can be anywhere from 30 minutes to find the perfect clutch to go with a gown they have, or up to four days to build a wardrobe for the season,” Ferreira adds.

So what are this fall’s must-haves that Ferreira will be showing his clients? Combat boots make their way into our closets so get ready to channel your inner '90s grunge rebel. In terms of shades, brown is making a comeback and it looks so chic when incorporated in leather satchels. Finally, if prints are your thing, opt for python-inspired ones this fall—whether it’s a bag or a pair of over-the-knee boots, it makes for a great statement accessory.

Men should definitely add a stylish pair of camouflage sneakers—they are the perfect footwear option for a brunch rendez-vous or a casual weekend spent away.

Now check out Patel’s top five pieces, for both men and women, to add to your accessories closet.
