Mara Hoffman has become a reliable and sustainable go-to for fun, functional...

I began taking pictures as a teenager when I started working as a model around Europe. Modeling became an education for me, about fashion—I now have the accessories label Stærk & Christensen—and photography.

I spent my time on set absorbing as much knowledge as I could from the legendary photographers I worked with. I spend summers and Christmas here, at my home right on the water, north of Copenhagen.

I’m always shooting, either with my Huawei P20 phone or a Leica: my flowers; Lotus, the daughter of one of my high school friends; and the porcelain in my cupboard—some I inherited from my beloved grandmother, who passed away last year at age 100.

And, of course, the water. Being surrounded by the ocean definitely shapes who we are in Scandinavia; it somehow makes us rather free and mellow in our approach to life. People tend to assume we are very happy here and make our quality of life a high priority. And, well, we are, and we do.
