Double Vision

In the hills of Los Angeles, two designers inhabit a modern bohemia.

In 2006, Tom Ford launched his own label with a relatively modest entry: sunglasses. Since then Tom Ford has become a luxury house, with full mens and women’s runway collections; fragrance (Neroli Portofino is a summer staple) and beauty (the $36 Drake lipstick is a current bestseller); handbags (new for summer is the Tara cross body in neon); the new Private Collection range of real buffalo horn eyewear (Tom himself wears the No. 5); and still some of the best sunglasses in the industry. (More than one million pairs were sold last year.) Last week came Ford's latest entry: timepieces.

The debut collection consists of eight rectangular styles (either in 27mm or 30 mm), in four materials, including 18-karat yellow gold, stainless steel, and matte stainless steel with black DLC (diamond like carbon). Prices start at $2,190 and all come with a strap that is interchangeable. Says Ford: “A watch is an accessory for me—just like a belt or a pair of shoes. I get dressed, put on my suit or my jeans, and put on my watch.” And like other accessories, Ford wanted to be able to change his watch to match his mood, or suit. "It was important to me to create the interchangeable straps so people could really have the option to completely change the look of the watch based on their preference.” The wearer can have a lot of preferences: There are 62 different straps, from calf leather ($2,190) to alligator ($10,100). tomford.com
