When it comes to high jewelry, what goes into making a masterpiece? In a new video, Dior gives DEPARTURES readers an exclusive sneak peek at the creation of the Majestueuse Opale, the centerpiece of the brand’s new high jewelry line, Dior et d’Opales, available now in select Dior boutiques. Though the piece’s defining feature is its large, shimmering opal—the favorite stone of Dior’s fine jewelry designer, Victoire de Castellane—there’s much more at play: The opal rotates to reveal a timepiece with a face of pave diamonds, and the band, comprised of yellow and white gold, diamonds, black opal, pink and yellow sapphires, spessartite and tsavorite garnets, emeralds, amethysts, and rubies, is a piece of haute jewelry unto itself. From conception to creation, the Majestueuse Opale, each unique and one-of-a-kind, takes roughly 850 hours (or 35 days) to make; the video shows the number of techniques used to craft it, including computer-assisted design and more traditional methods like casting, polishing, setting, and mounting. Get a closer look at how the Dior et d’Opales comes to life, below.
