There weren’t too many surprises on the best-dressed list for this year’s Met Gala honoring Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, the subject of the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition (opening May 4). The usual players—Rihanna, Gisele Bündchen, Ryan Reynolds, Lupita Nyong'o, and Cara Delevingne—all shined in their much-buzzed about red carpet wear on Monday evening, but one unlikely candidate did, in fact, outdo them all: 17-year-old Lily-Rose Depp, wearing a bright pink Chanel gown.
The French-American model and actress (who is also the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis) pulled off an utterly sophisticated look that belied her "inexperience.” But her poise should come as no surprise (see her first Met Gala appearance last year), and the Karl Lagerfeld–muse managed to strike the perfect balance between modernity and timelessness in this vibrant, sequined rose–adorned look. And even though Depp didn’t show off a Comme des Garçons design for the event, the ensemble she chose is not without its deference to the night’s honoree, as pink is one of Kawakubo’s favorite hues.
