How the Gucci Loafer Became a Modern Icon

As its 70 years of illustrious history prove, the style makes a lasting impression.

Back is, well, back. Instead of focusing on the details on the front of many gowns, starlets were all about showing off their backsides at the Oscars. Giuliana Rancic was one of the first to show off the popular look posing for photos in a black lacey Kelly NG dress complete with an open back before stars walked the red carpet. Although, once the A-listers started to arrive, it was clear Rancic wasn’t the only one donning the daring look. Posing for that classic over-the-shoulder shot, stars like Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, Lady Gaga and more proved that it was all about the backless dress this year making for some dramatic photos. But, would you expect anything less at the Academy Awards?

Charlize Theron

The presenter and former Oscar winner dazzled in a pale blue Dior gown with a completely open back. It was so stunning, in fact, we almost didn’t notice her new brunette do and Bulgari jewelry.

Irina Shayk

From the front, it appeared Bradley Cooper’s partner was in a modest high neck, long sleeved, black gown. But, as soon as she turned to the side to pose with her Oscar-nominated date, you noticed that it was a sexy backless gown complete with gold tassels.

Brie Larson

While we saw several stars in metallic outfits, Larson’s was particularly beautiful showing off her shoulders and back. She paired the backless, halter Celine dress with silver strappy Jimmy Choo heels and diamond earrings.

Lady Gaga

While the back of her black Alexander McQueen gown wasn’t as dramatic as some other stars at the Oscars, Lady Gaga’s swept-up hairdo by by hair stylist Frederic Aspiras using GHD + Joico allowed everyone to see the musician’s back tattoos quite clearly. Although, most of us were looking at the 128.54 carat Tiffany & Co. diamond hanging in the front.
