How the Gucci Loafer Became a Modern Icon

As its 70 years of illustrious history prove, the style makes a lasting impression.

There may be nothing more outrageous to come out of SIHH 2017 earlier this month than Audemars Piguet’s new Diamond Outrage. The third and final mega-diamond piece unveiled by the brand—AP has released one a year since 2015 (first the Diamond Punk, then the Diamond Fury)—the million-dollar-plus design is offered, for the first time in the three-part series, in two unique, one-of-a-kind versions: one set entirely in diamonds, the other in blue sapphires (pictured), at 1,238,000 and 1,038,000 Swiss francs respectively. The stunning timepiece is a decadent statement of watchmaking and gem setting, tempered by a healthy dose of modern, edgy daring.

Setting the Audemars Piguet Diamond Outrage

It took the master gem setters at Audemars Piguet approximately 2,500 hours to set the 18-karat white gold bracelet and it’s 48 spikes spiky structures, inspired by the long icicles that form in the Vallee de Joux, where Audemars Piguet is located. The glittering spires are built in varying heights ranging from 8mm tall to 40mm tall.

The sapphire edition of the bracelet is entirely snow set with 11,043 brilliant-cut sapphires in six different shades of blue and various sizes, totaling 65.47 carats of gemstones in all. Each stone is set so closely together that virtually no gold is visible.

The Secret Watch

Hidden in the midst of the icy-blue confection is a secret watch, with one of the spikes opening to reveal a 29.3mm mirror-polished dial with blued gold hands, protected by a glare-proof sapphire crystal. Powered by the Caliber 2701 quartz movement, it offers hours and minutes indication. Still, no one’s wearing this watch for the prowess of its complications.

Price and Availability

With just one of each version of this timepiece made, both Audemars Piguet Diamond Outrage renditions are only available for viewing and purchase by contacting Audemars Piguet directly. Pricing in the U.S. will not be established until the date of sale due to currency fluctuations. The Diamond Outrage in sapphire is CHF 1,038,000, and the Diamond Outrage in diamonds is CHF 1,238,000.
