Summer 1993
Even though Solo might as well be the only movie premiering this weekend—you don’t need us to tell you everyone’s raving about Donald Glover's turn as a young Lando Calrissian—there are a few other movies worth seeing. One of these is Summer 1993, the feature debut from Spanish filmmaker Carla Simon. The film—which won the prize for best first feature at the Berlinale in February and was Spain’s submission for this year’s Oscars—centers on a young girl who moves to the Spanish countryside to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Anchored by the remarkable performance of six-year-old Laia Artigas, Summer 1993 has been praised for its intimate, naturalistic filmmaking and empathic portrayal of childhood trauma. In theaters May 25.
The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish
With the nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially upon us, there’s no shortage of Royal Wedding coverage on the ol’ telly. But after watching Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon skewer Pasadena’s Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, my precious pop culture attention span will be devoted to their alter egos, Cord and Tish, as they roast England’s proud, centuries-old marital traditions. Why? Honestly, because not everything on your must-see list has to be prestige TV. Moving from Amazon to HBO for this special, “broadcast legends” Cord Hosenbeck (Ferrell) and Tish Cattigan (Shannon) will cover the event live in the morning with an assist from SNL alum Tim Meadows. Their coverage will be rebroadcast at 9:45 pm that evening. Airs on HBO on Sunday, May 20.
