A vibrant counterpart to the slew of international art fairs coming up on the horizon, the Hammer Museum’s fourth biennial puts the spotlight on artists working in the greater Los Angeles area, with a focus on emerging practitioners. The 32 artists selected, ranging in age from 29 to 97, by the exhibition’s curators explore several shared themes, many tied to the current political climate if not directly addressing it; the body and the varied pressures put upon it; the need for community and sense of place; the relationship of ritual to knowledge; and the desire to represent the marginalized are among the ideas explored in the works on display, which span printmaking, assemblage, installation, performance, textiles and more. For a preview of what to expect, the museum and its curators, Anne Ellegood (senior curator), and Erin Christovale (assistant curator), and MacKenzie Stevens (curatorial associate) have also created a multi-textured show preview video overflowing with pure Cali vibes.
