Catherine Kwong Design specializes in high-end residential and hospitality projects with an emphasis on modern architecture and custom detailing. The firm brings a fresh approach to elegant, tailored interiors, mixing modern with vintage and high art with personal treasures to create moments of unexpected beauty. Before starting her own firm, Kwong designed interiors in New York for Studio Sofield and Ralph Lauren.
Approach to Residential Design
She believes the best projects begin with a strong design concept. “All the elements have to be there: scale, proportion, balance of textures and color,” but her work goes beyond just getting those details right. "Design is about expression. I try to keep moving; to see new things and learn about new ideas," she says. "It makes me a better designer and one with something to say."
The firm's clients tend to be young and modern, with a strong sense of style, which has allowed the firm to create interiors that reflect such a lifestyle: luxe and elegant, but with a bit of an edge. For Kwong, it's important to create beautiful spaces that have a point of view.
Kwong says fashion is a big source of inspiration. In fashion, she's drawn to the same things as in interiors: clean lines, rich layers, big statement pieces paired with classic and tailored pieces, and beautiful handmade details. She has worked and learned from such legendary designers as Bill Sofield, Ralph Lauren and Paul Vincent Wiseman.
