Borgen, Denmark

Danish coalition politics might not sound like the most exciting premise, but three seasons of BBC Four’s Borgen (produced by the same Danish broadcaster as AMC’s The Killing) have proven otherwise. Birgitte Nyborg, played by the wonderful Sidse Babett Knudsen, is Denmark’s first female prime minister, and the show follows her through the ups and downs of cutthroat politics, compromises, tenuous alliances and her efforts to balance her career with the needs of her family. It’s The West Wing for Europeans but more sophisticated and far more addictive. The series aired its last episode in March 2013. Where to Watch: Season three premièred in the United States on KCET last fall. kcet.org/shows/borgen.
