Café Myriade, Montreal

Noting the Canadian location of this particular spot, it may not be surprising that Café Myriade focuses on approachability, meaning customer commentary and critique—and not the doctrine of the barista—come first. Yet as friendly as the service is, the café’s attitude shouldn’t be confused with its reputation for turning out serious quality brews. Melbourne-based coffee expert Matthew Perger is known to say, “Café Myriade is one of those businesses that’s so far ahead of the curve, you don’t even realize it until years later.” Using beans from Vancouver’s 49th Parallel and spots like San Francisco’s Ritual Roasters, the menu includes everything from espresso to quality batch-brewed coffee. Whatever your choice, don’t be surprised if you’re asked, earnestly, for your opinion. 1432 Rue Mackay; 51-4/939-1717; cafemyriade.com.
