Walden Country Inn & Stables

A rural alternative to a weekend in downtown Cleveland

Aurora, OH
A rural alternative to a weekend in downtown Cleveland is the Walden Country Inn & Stables, 35 minutes from the city. The property was built just over two years ago. And though rural, it is not what one would visualize as a country inn. All 25 suites are spacious (from 1,100 to 1,500 square feet), with soaring cedar-paneled ceilings and lots of natural light streaming in through tall windows and skylights. Common elements in most rooms are: soothing earth-tone color schemes; oversized showers outfitted in blue-green Vermont slate; king-sized beds with their own world of pillows; gas fireplaces; and en suitewhirlpool baths. Weekenders should take advantage of corporate weekday perks, like arranging for a private movie screening in the 100-seat theater. There are 32 horses that can be ridden in the 240 x 80-foot indoor arena or on the property's 110 acres of trails. But such rural isolation is not without its drawbacks. Local dining options are few, and even the area's most highly recommended restaurant (in a charming 180-year-old restored barn) was unremarkable and draws mostly the local country club set. $195-$300. 1119 Aurora Hudson Road; 888-808-5003; fax 330-562-8001. www.waldenco.com
