Set in a sleek 19th-century mansion near central Moscow, the French eatery Carré Blanc has a very simply decorated main dining room—a refreshing statement in a city where excess is the norm. The Zenlike setting also features a summer terrace with strawberry-red walls and potted petunias that bring to mind the south of France. Service is exceedingly polite. (It better be: Putin celebrated New Year’s here.) Dinner, $200. At 19/2 Ulitsa Seleznevskaya; 7-495/258-4403; carreblanc.ru.
