Master of Craft

American Murano

Michael Schunke learned the Venetian technique of glassblowing in Maine. The 36-year-old studied at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts under Lino Tagliapietra, who taught him incalmo, the process of binding different colors in the same piece. In keeping with his old-world/new-world training, Schunke's Nine Iron Studios, in Pennsylvania, now produces a stunning collection of delicate curlicued goblets and bold abstract expressionist vases ($2,000 each). 610-869-5926;
