The enigma project

Steve Richardson loves to frustrate his customers. The president of Stave Puzzles, Richardson and his crew handcraft the fantastically complicated jigsaw puzzles that drive fans like Bill Gates to the brink. Cut from African mahogany, they can have irregular edges, multiple solutions, even pieces that fit in more than one place—whatever the customer wants, since every puzzle, whether 45 pieces or 1,000, is made to order ($95-$5,895). Stave will use familiar art images, clients' photos, or commissioned works. To keep things interesting, Stave just introduced a time-share program: Use six puzzles for six weeks each ($3,600) and keep one for yourself at the end. 802-295-5200;
