Thomas Moser Cabinetmakers

Freeport, ME
The Laptop Desk by Thomas Moser Cabinetmakers is a beautiful blending of Shaker-inspired design and classic cabinetmaking techniques in the service of modern technology. Based on the Lap Desk designed by Thomas Jefferson, the Moser desk has a slanted leather-topped surface—perfect for writing the old-fashioned way—that raises to reveal three compartments designed to accommodate modern office technology. The middle section is ideal for a laptop computer, as it opens to a level surface complete with fold-down wrist support. The two side compartments are made for a fax and printer: Each opens to 18 x 22 inches with a drop-down bottom panel that gives a maximum depth of 10.5 inches. (Just make sure that's enough room for fax and printer to function with the lid closed.) The desk is made entirely of American black cherry, and joints are both dovetail and mortise-and-tenon. $5,050. 149 Main Street; 207-865-4519. Additional showrooms in New York (699 Madison Avenue; 212-753-7005) and San Francisco (3395 Sacramento Street; 415-931-8131).
