THE PIECE French ormolu clock, circa 1815, with a figure of George Washington in military dress holding a bald eagle. The 14-by-10-inch case is engraved FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE, AND FIRST IN HIS COUNTRYMEN'S HEART.

SIGNIFICANCE The clockworks are by royal maker Jean-Baptiste Dubuc. Washington's stance and dress were derived from John Trumbull's famous portrait, explains Elizabeth Feld, associate director of decorative arts.
