The Thames, London
There are lots of different ways to walk the Thames Path—the national trail that traces the Thames from its source in the Cotswolds all the way to London. History buffs will start in Staines (Staines Town Hall, Market Square; 01-78/446-4822), which was first settled by the Romans in A.D. 43, and walk toward Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed. Picnic in Runnymede Meadows or tour Magna Carta Island (above Bell Weir Lock; Berkshire) for a glimpse of medieval history. Continue on toward Windsor and end the journey with a visit to Windsor Castle—home of the British royal family for centuries.
