The Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida

The museum’s new $36 million space in Tampa Bay has two notable advantages: twice the square footage and better protection against tropical storms. Great news, considering this is a collection worth protecting. With 96 oil paintings, 100 watercolors and well over a thousand graphics, sketches and sculptures, it’s the largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Spain. The new building (designed by HOK) looks like a piece of Surrealist art in its own right: a glass façade made of more than a thousand triangular panels erupts organically from an otherwise nondescript, rectangular concrete building, spilling out toward nearby palm trees. 1 Dalí Blvd.; 727-823-3767; thedali.org.
