Blantyre, Lenox, Massachusetts
“Blantyre is more a home than a hotel,” says Luc Chevalier, sommelier of this Gilded Age mansion in Massachusetts. Guests are encouraged to slow down and savor the pleasures of another era each evening at the hotel (a Relais & Châteaux holding), as a pianist plays in the music room while Champagne and canapés are served. Dinner is a candlelit experience in the dining room, where the sommelier can advise on selections from the 12,000-bottle cellar. A wine list is available in every room (and online), so guests can peruse at their leisure before dinner and decide “where they wish to travel” via the extensive cellar.
Must Try: Royal Tokaji 2008 from Hungary is a wonderful sweet wine and a great accompaniment to dessert, foie gras or time spent by one of the woodburning fireplaces. 16 Blantyre Rd.; 413-637-3556; blantyre.com.
