Kilian Hennessy

Kilian Hennessy opens his first boutique in the United States.

For his first boutique in the States, Kilian Hennessy chose Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. “There’s a Louboutin for men next door and Nicholas Kirkwood across the street,” he said. “It’s perfect!” Since launching his perfume brand, By Kilian, in 2007, the heir to a long line of Cognac makers has consistently said his fragrances are unisex. “I don’t think in terms of men or women; the perfume has to express the emotion that carries its name. It has to tell the story.” And the latest story is one of success, as Hennessy continues to expand his growing fragrance line, with plans to introduce—in addition to the new store and the limited-edition evening minaudières he debuted three years ago—a unique scented jewelry collection that will be exclusive to the boutique. The shop itself is a reflection of Hennessy’s design aesthetic, featuring silk rugs from Nepal and silk chandeliers from Tokyo, all handmade to his specifications. But what we are most excited about is his latest perfume, Apple Brandy New York ($235), created just for the opening. “I always wanted to make a Cognac scent,” he says. “I worked on it for three years.” The smoky wood accord evokes Cognac’s oak casks blended with apple liquor, “my wink to New York, the Big Apple.” At 804 Washington St.; bykilian.com.
