With bold cuisine, cool hotels, legendary vineyards and world-class shopping, Cape Town and its winelands are ripe for the picking.

In the 21st century, South Africa has perhaps best been known for wine and the World Cup, both still keenly felt there. The World Cup has left its legacy in the form of top-tier hotels, guesthouses and spas, not to mention a surfeit of stadia. As for the wine, one need only drive an hour from Table Bay to the historic settlements of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to feel its vibrancy.

Having scrambled to open in time, the World Cup generation of hotels is now settling into the level of service that naysayers claim was lacking a year ago. Of course, they could just be feeling the pressure of an even younger generation of luxury hotels. Wine, as wine does, is simply getting better with age. And, as it did in Australia nearly a decade ago, it serves as the catalyst for bold new chefs and bright new restaurants. Finally, there is a national cuisine to match the brilliance of the country’s wines.
