A Shinola Bike

The Detroit-based watch and leather company changes gears.

Motor City may be known for the Hemi V-8, but now there’s new propulsion in the mix: 11-speed, internally geared hubs and Shimano Rapidfire Plus shifters. That’s what drives the Runwell (pictured, $2,950), an inaugural bike from Shinola, which took an old brand (it last made shoe polish before the Kennedy administration) to a declining city to make watches, leather goods and bicycles (and even a little shoe polish). The hand-built cruisers are, to revisit an old phrase, the Cadillacs of city bikes. shinola.com.
