For the past three years, Rafael Nadal has been a fixture at the U.S.
Open finals—and at the salon of celebrity stylist Julien Farel. We sit
center court to see how Farel gives the athlete his look.

Squeezed by the grueling schedule of the US Open, one of the best tennis players in the world, Rafael Nadal, took a break from competing to get his hair cut at Julien Farel’s Manhattan salon. Though Farel has a pop-up atelier at the Open’s Arthur Ashe Stadium, Nadal prefers the Madison Avenue location. “We have a good relationship,” says Nadal. “Julien does a very good job.” Last year, Farel famously cut Nadal’s hair short, and he went on to win the tournament. This year he only trimmed the tennis star’s mane—and Nadal lost the finals to Novak Djokovic, whose hair Farel also cuts. “The Spaniard and the Slav have very different ideas of style,” Farel says. “Nadal brings some Latin flair to his hair.”
